Is it normal that i forget that i'm black?

This is less about being black, and more about forgetting that I'm anything other than the people that I hang around. If I'm with a crowd of white people for an extended period of time, I forget that I'm not white until I look down at my hand or catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror, and it surprises me that I'm black.

There are also times when it doesn't matter who I'm with, I simply forget about the idea of race until I'm reminded of it again.

This may be an odd/confusing post, but does anyone (regardless of "race") understand what I mean?

Is It Normal?

  • I was adopted into a white family. Only thing black about me is my appearance. Really what people perceive to be the personality of a black person is a result of upbringing and learned culture.

  • Culture is being different in a way of humanity. And humanity is all the same physically.
No one should even have to know their culture when we are all human.

  • I liked reading these comments. Unfortunately, I live in an area where race is most important to a lot of people. It's great to be reminded that the whole world isn't backwards.

  • My skin is on the outside. I am on the inside. It surprises me that I am old. I feel young in my head.

Our deep self spirits are color blind anyway.

  • Im the same way. If only everyone saw everything like you. You forget since your not making a huge deal out of it. I forget what race I am too sometimes. I actually did not know what race I was till age 12. Since people wanting to insult me but couldn't figure out what race I was and I just had no idea.

  • I think it's normal. I'm half asian and the weirdest thing happened to me once. I usually go to a mostly white private school, but when I was a sophomore, I went to public school for one year.
As I was walking into class on the first day, I thought "Wow, I'm like the only white person in here!" But then I realized "Wait, I'm Asian."

  • That is nice. Very nice way of seeing things. Colour doesn't matter. I hate it when people think they are special, just cause they are white/ black.
You are not special! You are just another person on the planet.

So yes, well done for being a good person that doesn't care about race/ nationality and such.

  • We are all multicolored. Your outer shell is not really significant. Only to you, in this world.

  • This is very weird... I mean, I don't think "hey i'm white" all the time.. But I dont think I'm black either. DO you think YOU'RE WHITE or just don't think about it? As in, you think you're the same as them but then you remember your skin is different... but you feel the same? or you actually think you're white? okay all this sounds so confusing sorry ..haha. i don't really know, but i guess there aren't many black people in my neighbourhood so i dont have this problem.
