This is quite normal and pretty annoying. I find that some people like to talk a bunch of political nonsense in public to make themselves seem important but regardless if they have their knowledge even remotely right or not, NONE of them work or have any direct ties to the government like that and their opinions fall on deaf ears. There is a way to be informed without making yourself look like you need attention. Just straight ask them, "When was the last time you took office?" and see what you get.
