I have a Chinese penpal who lives in Canada. Her parents are from China. Your description of the Japanese sounds a lot like what I have observed from her description of family life. The Chinese seem to have an extremely depressing culture also, much as you are describing about the Japanese. She says her parents speak an unusual language - not Mandarin or business type Chinese - and even the children don't speak it! The mother only speaks this language and can't communicate except with the father. The father and children speak English, but not terribly well. None of them speak French, which makes it hard to find jobs where they live in Ottawa. It all sounds awful to me. They live together in what sounds like a very dysfunctional family. She doesn't know how to make friends and her marriage failed. Her Chinese husband treated her badly. I wish I could help her, but I can't figure out how she can better her life.
Is it normal that I find people who want to live in Japan pathetic?
