I don't know. I have had similiar problems with a friend of mine. He calls me all the time and it really bores me because he can't hold a conversation and he rambles a lot. I think you should keep in touch with him and remember these two things I think I might know about you and him:
1. He's locked up and probably doesn't have friends. It's been a hard life for him. It sounds like you're the only friend he's got.
2. You are not a bad person for wanting a break from him.
