Is it normal that i feel the need to do this in bed?

I am a girl. My issue is difficult to explain, but I only have it night.

Often, when I'm in bed and my feet are exposed (or even covered), They just feel awkard and strange, I have this urge to squeeze them (not with my hands, but almost like making a fist and clenching, but with my feet) and this awkwardness is relieved for a moment as soon as I squeeze. I use the word "awkwardness" to explain what I feel, but I can't really explain it any better. Its more of a mental feeling rather than a physical one. This urge to clench my feet goes away if I begin to think about something else and my mind isnt just on how strange my feet feel to me. I hate this, but i don't get it very often, and when I try to resist clenching my feet, it feels almost impossible.

It would be awesome if someone else had this issue, but I'm so confused as to why I have it.

Is It Normal?

  • I kind of know what you mean because I seem to remember doing this at one point. It became something different, though. If I'm in shoes that are too tight for me to splay my toes easily, it becomes all I can think about and I really force them sometimes so I can get some separation between my toes. Once I've done it, the urge goes away and I forget all about it. It's kind of like a foot claustrophobia.

I do clench my feet a lot, though. I think I'm less evolved than most people and my feet are more monkeyish because I sometimes use them to pick things up and pass them (or kick them) into my hand.

  • Whenever my feet are outside the perimeter of my bed I feel a bit uncomfortable, like piranhas are going to jump up and eat my feet. Not really relevant but I thought I should say it just so you know that other people have weird things when sleeping too:P.

I don't have the same thing as you, but I do understand what you're talking about and I wouldn't be surprised if it were normal. I guess I'm sort of similar because every now and again I have to be completely wrapped up by a blanket and the only thing out of the blanket is my head.

  • I'm trying to sleep right now and it's been hours. (Trying to find a remedy but found this) I don't think this is normal, or restless leg syndrome. This is a very accurate description of what I'm experiencing. (I'm also female tho)
I don't feel it when I get my mind off of my feet. When i remember, the feeling goes back. I hate this. This has been happening since I was a kid. I ask my parents to squeeze my feet cause I couldn't sleep and it was giving me anxiety. There's really no point when the feeling goes away by squeezing.
It also happens to me even when I'm not in bed. Most of the time it's the left foot. So when I'm standing, i step on my left foot with my body weight.
I really don't think this is normal as i find it really hard to find people experiencing the same. This post was even 8 years ago. I hope there's already a solution for this. I hope i find it soon

  • lol I fold the bottom of my duvet under my feet using my feet - it's easy when you've had years of practice! It's become part of my bedtime routine. I don't like them sticking out.

  • I cant fall asleep unless I'm making a sliding up and down motion with my feet(up and down being only like 2 inches, and jut moving my feet), and this is only when they are uncovered. I also have to cover my head for some reason when I try to go to sleep on my stomach. lol WOW...i sound a little weird...can you imagine sleeping next to someone with their covered head in the pillow, moving their uncovered feet up and down. fuck...is it normal?

  • You probably have restless legs syndrome. I do. It originates in the brain and you get sensations that you have to move your legs in order to get it to go away. Then it starts over and over again.

Think about what you did and ate on those days and see if you have a trigger.

  • I have the exact same issue as you. Except I feel it almost every single time my feet are exposed while under a blanket. I also feel like the I want to scream and the feeling like never goes away.

  • This happens to me, it's just a habit really.

  • I think the claustrophobic thing is a pretty good way of putting it, even if I have it when my feet are uncovered. I figure it may have to do with stress.
