  • I am 40 years old and up until last summer I had never "killed" anything. My husband bought me a .22 rifle and took me ptarmigan hunting. (I live in Alaska) I shot my first one, and started crying. He told me not to cry, and started laughing. I felt terrible. I had nightmares about for several days afterwards. He took me out again a few weeks later and I shot a second one. I didn't cry that time, but I did have mixed emotions. We are planning a Moose hunting trip in August, and I am supposed to get a Bull. I don't know if I can do it or not. We have been practicing shooting my hunting rifle (not my .22) and I keep thinking about how I felt when I killed the Ptarmigans. I understand how you feel completely, and think that it is totally normal. You are not a wimp or a pussy or any other derogatory name they may be calling you. I feel you are a sensitive soul, and I don't think you should perseverate on it anymore.
