Is it normal that i feel like i'm becoming slow/dumb?

I feel as if I am becoming dumber all the time...I'm slower than I used to be and my thoughts are consumed by worrying about how I appear to others. I used to think about better things, and have more confidence, not worry so much about bs....now, sometimes, I even have a hard time communicating with my friends. I'm 18.

Is It Normal?

  • I've said it at least a dozen times, and I'm going to repeat it here because it has relevance.

A man is what his thoughts revolve around. If you dedicate your mind to dull mindless activities you'll become dull. Dwell on angry matters, and you'll become angry. Dwell on love and you'll become more loving.

So watch historic films (Napoleon studied history and man's actions. There is wisdom to be gleaned there), take a philosophy course, or else read an introduction to political philosophy. Intelligence is not some arcane treasure only to be found by the most shrewd. It's been staring at man in the face for ages! People look, but don't see. They hear, but don't listen.

    • So true! Thanks for commenting. I have a fav quote I think you'll like...I heard it from Steve Vai, he was quoting Thomas Edison and Albert Einstein: "Thoughts are things. Thoughts are actually things. They're measurable, they change the molecular structure of things. When we think, we send out thoughts, and they are like a frequency, and what we get back is like-minded things, that we're thinking. And that's how all of us create all of this gear, it's how we create our poetry..and we all do it, you know. Even the Kardashaians.

      • As a future tip try and not quote others. Let your ideas spring purely from your own mind; don't let it be influenced by the ideas of men who lived, failed, and died.

The foundation for any ethos must be forged alone.

        • Seems like nowadays the longer you've been dead, the smarter you are, lol. True though, thanks. But your comment does somewhat contradict itself...

    • "Dwell on angry matters, and you'll become angry. Dwell on love and you'll become more loving"

that's interesting, Valkeer. It does take a lot of effort though. Where did you learn this? Can you recommended some reading material?

      • Anything historical works for me. When approaching philosophy in general it's best to start with the most basic questions (what is morality? Is there morality? What right? etc) and move on from there.

  • I've felt the same way as you before. But I wouldn't let it worry you too much. I doubt you're getting slower. Your mind is just in another place these days. Thats all.

  • I've been feeling like this lately. I used to be a really avid reader, but since I started using social networks, I don't read that much anymore. When I do read, I lose interest fast and go back on Facebook/Twitter. I can feel myself getting dumber every day. Also, like you, I have been constantly worrying about what people think of me. I constantly compare myself to others. I wish I wasn't like this. -_-

  • See a doctor or therapist. It sounds like you could have some issues with social anxiety. It doesn't mean you're dumb. I have it too.

  • I feel that way sometimes. It probably has something to do with the warnings my doctor gave me about the possibility of repeated head trauma causing brain damage. I am a bit of a klutz, and I have suffered 4 head traumas. Well, the first was a double concussion, so technically, I have had 5.
