lady, Never compare yourself to others, if he was controlling and pessimistic I think he's the loser not you.
Somehow in this life there are always people who take advantage of the others and get away with it just like your ex bf here...maybe he's having fun now and everything but you never know what might happen tomorrow,and don't worry about it Karma never forget, soon it will come back to him hard :)
as for your "shy" attitude its sexy with guys but when your trying to make friends you should REALLY but it aside and be more open.
