Is it normal that I don't understand the appeal of drugs and alcohol?

  • In addition to what everyone else has said, make sure you draw a clear line between "addiction" and "doing drugs". The only "drug" I ever use is alcohol, and I do so because drinking alcohol in a social situation with good friends is fun. It would be fun if no-one was drinking too, just a different type of fun. Have you really *never* seen *any* positive consequences of drugs? Have you never seen drunk people out having fun and being raucous? That's a positive consequence right there. You're right to say there's no positive consequences of being addicted, but using any drug in moderation has pretty obvious short-term positive consequences: it's fun.

Here's another thing to get straight: refusing to drink or use other drugs does not socially isolate anyone unless the only places you can think of to socialise are places where everyone drinks. Believe it or not, there are other sober people in the world too! :O Go out and find some of them! :) You'll have a great time.

I'm not advocating going out and getting drunk or high every night, mind you. If not using any drugs (apart from caffeine, which absolutely does count) suits you, go for it. I just find it hard to see how you could fail to understand why people use drugs.
