I couldn't agree with you more about the hard drugs and downers. But I've been a pot head since the 60's and really enjoy "turning on" as I prefer to think of it. I don't enjoy getting "stoned" or "wasted". I enjoy turning on to whatever I'm doing, be it working on an engine, listening to music, studying or sailing. I am addicted to life so "going down" on depressants, or hard drugs seems pointless and I need my body too much to use coke, speed, crack or E.
As for alcohol, the effects are pretty much a downer after a while so I'd rather not get drunk. But there are drinks out there that taste really good. There are literally thousands of mixed drinks to choose from. I will not drink Bud, Miller or any other watered down, tasteless horse piss Americans call beer. But there are fine tasting beers out there, such as Newcastle Brown, Bass Ale and some like Guinness. Microbreweries abound now and there are lots of interesting beers to choose from. You don't need to drink yourself into a stupor, but I'm sure you could find something you actually like the taste of, which might make you more comfortable when your friends are drinking. And since drinking premium alcohol is more expensive, you can drink less than everyone else pleading poverty and fewer people will buy you a drink, so YOU can control your intake.
Is it normal that I don't understand the appeal of drugs and alcohol?
