You have to work on it yourself. I have always been supershy - as in no eye contact or speaking the first few meetings. But at 23 I learned its kinda hard to do job interviews like that. Try just being more open with random people (youll prob never see them again anyways so don't fret.) Ask the clerk at the store how their day has been. Hold the elevator for someone at the mall, talk about the weather. Heck, just smile & say good morning when you walk past someone! It'll all start feeling more natural.

I should mention that what you described is not "abnormal", but it can be inconvenient, hence my suggestions.
