Is it normal that i don't step on cracks?

Whenever I'm walking, I don't step on cracks in the road, nor do I step on lines in the sidewalk. Also when the floor has a certain pattern (like at my work the floor has white squares) I won't step on the white squares.

I've tried to do it, but it's like my foot won't step on them. It trembles, like it has a mind of it's own. If I accidentally do it, I get a bad feelings, and my foot feels wrong. So I have to wipe it on the floor. I started doing this in high school at around 16, and I've been doing it ever since (i'm 22 now) Stepping on the cracks just seems wrong to me.

Is It Normal?

  • I know a kid who does this and goes far out of his way to avoid them. However this is accompanied by touching parking meters and lamp posts. If he misses one, he must go back and fix it and I've never seen him step on a crack but if he does, I imagine it's bad. This and counting, and washing , and organizing, and memorizing are all compulsions brought on by his severe OCD. Now, I certainly don't want to promote stigma or anything and I'm sure your fine but look in it maybe. This could just be a thing, a random little thing. We all have some idiosyncrasies.

  • Same here, but I started when I was 5 or 6 because of the "break your momma's back" thing. And I guess the habit caught on.

  • It is a common superstition that stepping on a crack can bring bad luck or misfortune, kind of like walking under a ladder or a black cat crossing your path. There is a saying that if you "step on a crack, you will break your mother's back". You won't of course. There is no connection at all between any crack in the pavement or sidewalk and anyone's mother's spinal column. But... if you believe that, maybe you should avoid stepping on cracks, if it helps give you peace of mind. Usually though, it is like the Stevie Wonder song - "when you believe in things that you don't understand, then you suffer". "Superstition ain't the way!"

  • I tend to do it when I forget myself, otherwise I try to avoid doing in front of people because I don't like it when people look at me funny. :)

  • I sometimes do this when I'm walking on a sidewalk to campus. I don't know why but if my foot ends up lining up on a crack I get kinda down. I don't go out of my way to avoid it though.

    • Same here... dont go outta my way but since childhood I ca remember doing this crack thing, I count numbers then recount until it feels right in my head; I flip the light switch more than once sometimes; I do a lot of stuff a certain way.. but the weirdest one for me is my breathing pattern.. If I breathe in once then I exhale once twice or however many times. Its usuallu only a couple of times in a row seeing as I would pass out quite often if not in short intervals. lol Anyone else have these little OCD's?

  • I used to do that as a child and I still do it sometimes. I don't know if it's 'normal' but I'm surprised to see that someone else has the same habit
