Is it normal that i don't really like the "ok boomer" phrase?

I tend to associate that sentence with people who think that common sense is just old fashioned.

Wanting the borders closed? Those people will reply "OK boomer" to what you desire.
You agree that there are only 2 genders, and not 884738125124689854+ of them? They will reply with the same phrase.
You support free speech? Same thing happens again.
And the list goes on.

I don't mind it if someone uses "OK boomer" jokingly though. But I dislike it when people that lack common sense think that common sense is old fashioned.

I do not consider that phrase as ageist at all. I just associate that phrase with like 20-40 year old Tumblr-using social justice warriors, and very bratty and irresponsible teenagers who literally disrespect everybody who isn't like them.

And if you want to know how old I am, I'm 24. I also don't even consider myself to be absurdely strict. I'm conservative, yes, but strict? Not really. I'm just conservative on things like border control, plain human biology and free speech support.

I'm 70 and yes that makes me a "boomer."
We do seem, by watching recent events, to at least to have some common sense. A colleague recently said to me "why they call it common, it's rarer than rocking horse shit these days"!

Just about every phrase gets over used thanks to memes and lack of original thought from the masses. My problem with the phrase, other than what I just mentioned, is that it is disrespectful and shows you have no intention of listening to what is being communicated.

    • Exactly my point.

Not ageist but definitely disrespectful and a sign of a lack of listening.

It's just a stupid trend for obnoxious people.

it's just lazy debating, like saying "I'm not going to try and explain my view to you using logic, I will instead call you old and cringy". Gross! I'm not even a boomer but it's so condescending and uncreative.

I'm 50 years old, and that makes me a Generation-X person. The okay boomer phrase doesn't really bother me much, but I can see how it would be annoying. I have been sick, and tired of hearing people overuse the word amazing for a good while now.

Very well put. I couldn't agree more. I notice there's a lot of labeling these days.

  • I think the term is stupid.

And as a left-leaning Millennial I have respect for Boomers. After all they gave us the internet, smart phone, Taco Bell, etc.
