Very normal. I've been there in a way. In short, had a female friend I met since high school and several years after that. We were insanely close and talked about everything. Always wanted to date her though and we did for a short time but it ended. Tried to be friends even after giving space and I got ignored and treated to half-hearted responses, thus to me, ending the friendship.
I know its different since you never went with your female friend and relationship ending has its own rules but the whole ignoring and lying thing is the same. I remember a similar story on this site and people attacked the OP with things like "you probably got her mad, tough luck", no, people get STUPID and you immediately dump whatever connection you used to have in the trash. Have another friend enjoy your kindness OP, she doesn't deserve anymore of it and you will feel very empowered for shutting her out.
