  • Avoiding soft drinks is very sensible. The sugar content of the stuff is absurdly high, and it's suspected that the artificial sweeteners in the diet versions possibly play a role in the increased incidence of diabetes.

    Don't let anyone tell you that you're weird for never drinking the over-priced crap. The majority of Americans consume at least one soft drink every day, but around 40% never do. Here's a link to an article citing a real survey:

    Soft drinks are just flavoured sugar syrup with added carbon dioxide and a lot of high-pressure branding attached. We instinctively find sweet tastes appealing, and the carbonation increases the appeal of soft drinks for complicated physiological reasons, but soft drink companies also do their damndest to manipulate people psychologically.

    Pepsico and Coca Cola _each_ spent around $4 billion on marketing in 2017, with about half of that going on advertising. They wouldn't spend that money unless they were sure it was having an effect on consumers.
