Is it normal that i dislike it when people tell me to smile?

I think it's downright rude. It hasn't personally happened to me too many times and I understand in every way that the person can mean well, but my opinion stays. Is that so weird? I just think that if I'm not smiling and this person haphazardly notices my non-smiling face and goes ''Smile! It can't have been that bad.'' ... It can't have been that-
O RLY? How do you know this? Do you follow my every footstep? Are you in my life? Do I know you? Are you psychic, then? Can you go away before I slap you?
I know, this isn't something to get your pubic hair in a twist for but, still, it's annoying but no one around me seems to think so.
I mean, what if my cat gave birth to premature/undeveloped kittens this morning all over my house and the sight was scarring? It can't have been that bad. What if last night my entire family died and I am now an orphan? It can't have been that bad. What if I was diagnosed with some almost incurable mental illness? It. Can't. Have. Been. That. Bad.
Really, Mrs. Graham? (Excuse the inner Jenna Marbles, that's the teacher that told me to 'smile'.) So, what would your definition of 'that bad' be? Complete apocalypse of nuclear war maybe? Or a morning without a coffee?
Maybe it would change if she told me that for every second I didn't smile innocent panda babies died terrible sad deaths.

Is It Normal?

  • I dislike it a lot. I barely ever smile unless I'm infront of my mirror or directly speaking to someone about something that requires a smile. My smiles are more like smirks or half assed ones.

When they ask me to smile, I smile. I have nothing to smile about other than moving such an annoying situation along.

  • I don't like it either. People assume that if you aren't smiling then you aren't happy, which is stupid. I mean, if I was smiling every time I was happy, then my cheeks would have six packs!

I usually smile quite a lot. So much so that I sometimes get strange looks for just smiling to myself whenever I think of something which makes me laugh or just happy. Besides that, I usually have no particular look on my face, it just is what it is, and that often gets me the occasional "cheer up" or "smile" and even a few "you look depressed", even though I'm not really anything. I don't get it, I don't look depressed!

    Anyway, I'd say it's normal:).

  • There's this friendly old man that sometimes sits in front of the coffee shop I frequent. He's in a wheelchair, wears a beret with a feather, and always asks people to smile. Actually, he says, "you dropped your smile, better pick it up." He means well. I sit and chat with him sometimes. Some people smile and he gets really happy. Some people give him a dirty look and look all offended. He shrugs it off and moves on to complimenting the next passerby on their shoes. Either way, it's normal.

  • Tell them you have a rare disorder that prevents you from being able to smile around disgustingly ugly people.

  • I agree on this one actually. I personally can't stand when people tell me to smile, especially when I'm in a really bad mood or I'm upset. I think if people don't understand why I'm NOT smiling, then they shouldn't be telling me to. NORMAL =D

  • I hate to be told to smile for a pic. Guys aren't supposed to look at the cam and smile and so many pics of me look crappy just because the moron who took them told me to smile. as a shy person I have this tendency not to be able to keep a serious face if made to laugh so they always made me have that cheesy smile.

  • You are normal to not like it, it's an underhanded criticism that you are a frowny-face and they don't like it.
Tell them to go f*** themselves.

*I can't use real swear words yet, otherwise my comments don't show up for a few days. Stupid mother-f***ing rules!

  • I hate it too. People always tell me "you're so pretty when you smile," and "you should smile more." I guess that would make me more approachable, but i don't want to be approached most of the time. What the hell is wrong with people?

    *death stare*

  • This girl used to tell me to smile. I found it rather assuming.

I just smile when I'm happy.

  • Sometimes I need to and I'm glad someone suggested it :) but other times I'm in no mood to and probably have little reason to, otherwise I would be

  • Normal. Telling people to smile is creepy. Sometimes people do it as a weird flirting thing, too, which is just much worse.
