Is it normal that i cry over a tv show more than i do in real life?

So let's get one thing straight: I am not an emotional person in real life. I have gone through several traumatizing things in my life. I barely shed a tear. I mean of course I was sad but I just didn't cry. Now when something traumatizing happens on my favorite tv show, let's say my favorite character dies, I bawl my eyes out as if it were my mother dying. I feel pathetic about it afterward but I'm not sure if it's normal. Does anyone else cry over tv shows whether emotional in real life or not?

When I was a teenager in the eighties one of my favourite TV shows to watch before bed was Highway To Heaven and I remember some episodes were really emotional that I cried myself to sleep several times lol. I can relive those times because I have the show on DVD now.

I cry watching some movies, even anime.
I never cry about real life. Not even when a friend or relative dies. I've seen to many bad things in real life

I've had experience crying over real life and tv shows, so I'm at least experienced enough to tell you that's fully normal. Attachment is the key here, in my experience. I personally invest way more emotionally in the 7 seasons of character development I see in a show then I would in a traumatizing event I want to just learn and move on from like a healthy human being.

You may be more open and emotionally vulnerable when watching this stuff. You know, that's okay. You've got an outlet to get the feeels out.

  • I'm not sure... Are you really not emotional in real life or do you pretend to not be emotional?

      • Okay, if you do feel emotions in real life, that's good. As for why you rarely cry about real life, it's possible that real life is "too much" to truly acknowledge. You might express emotion in response to TV as an alternative to expressing it in response to real life. But don't quote me on that, I'm not a psychiatrist.
