Even most running water is unsafe to drink; a knife is good for catching your food, opening your food, skinning/filleting your food and protection among other things and do you know how difficult it is to make fire without a lighter or matches? A backpack is the least necessary object, but it would be very useful if you found an abundance of food to gather and were on the go. I don't think anybody could do without these things for long, unless they had a house with stored items or something.
Is it normal that I can't think of any object I couldn't live without?

Simple. A knife, a backpack and a canteen. Lighter and lighter fluid would be good too.
