It sounds like a leg cramp. Sometimes they are excruciatingly painful. I had a friend one that had it so bad that he formed bruses where the cramp was.
Drink lots of water and eat things with potasium in them, like a banana or kiwi. Electrolytes are good to so gatorade will help too.
As soon as you get one stand up and walk around or lock your knee. At least this is what I've learned over the years.
