Is it normal that I can't stop playing dating sims?

  • If it's not interfering with your normal life, there's nothing wrong with it. If you really want to stop, this seems like the kind of "addiction" you can just go cold turkey on. Or set rules for yourself on how much time you're playing it. Whatever.

"I find that I much more easily fall in love with characters in dating sims or VNs. It annoys me because I know that's not normal."

I mean, considering the entire purpose of those games *is* to get you to fall in love with their characters, I'd say it *is* normal.

"I get so invested in those things, and I'm on the edge of my seat up until the big confession scene(s)."

Well, that sounds fun. Go ahead and enjoy yourself. I wish I could find games that get me on the edge of my seat so easily.

"that's really not going to benefit me in the long run"

Okay, but... so? It's good to plan for your future - save for retirement, whatever - but not everything you do should be for "the long run." One day you'll run out of tomorrows and you'll realize you've never really enjoyed your life while it was happening. Maybe playing dating sims doesn't help you in the long run, but it's enjoyable right now. The present matters. There's nothing bad about reading a visual novel and falling in love with a fictional character.
