Is it normal that I can't stand people smiling?

  • Smiling is a natural reaction for most people, same with laughing. They are not trying to brag, show off, or virtue signal their happiness. It is just a side effect of that happiness.

As for people who smile out of politeness, that is just cultural and societal, and it is considered very cold and unusual not to smile upon meeting or greeting someone (at least in the US where I am from). People who smile in pictures do so because it is often more flattering than a serious face, and most people want to look like they are enjoying life in their photos rather than resembling a mugshot.

Why does "public display of happiness" bother you so much? Are you unhappy and therefore don't like seeing others happy? What about happiness bothers you?
