Is it normal that i can't look at teachers and adults in the eye?

At my primary school i was fine, up to year 9 in secondary school, i started to lose confidence for some reason. I couldn't look at teachers in the eye, or even have them in my vision. i always feel they are watching me, and i get realllly paranoid. i tend to take the long route round school if theres a teacher there, because i end up scraping across the corridor wall. In assemblies, i would stare at the floor, making sure i can't see anyone. i can't even look at my mentor!

I'd say it's pretty normal, and it won't last forever. I had the confidence of a pea when I was in school because kids and even some teachers were cruel. Being constantly put down could result in no eye contact. I never looked those people in the eyes until I was older and gained my confidence back. I think it could be based on how you feel about yourself and your confidence level.

The only way to change this behaviour is to just force yourself to do it....it will change your life. Start with a few seconds at at time and push your boundaries, extend the time as your comfort level grows. If I can do, you can do it!
A strange thing starts to happen, when you start to act more confident, you become more confident and its like a snowball. Good luck!

Maybe it's because you feel diminutive compared to these powerful adults who basically hold your future in their hands.Well....they're a lot more human than you'd think.I stare them in the eye, and i'm friends with most of them.Try to get to know them to an extent, then you'll feel less intimdated by them.

eye contact is very important, especially when you get older. even though its tough you should try making some eye contact. you dont have to stare just look at them for a second or two and youll get used to it.

It's pretty normal imo, Eye contact is a very important part of nonverbal communication. Your confidence in yourself having maybe decreased can certainly cause something like this. Making and maintaining eye contact can be perceived as sending some kind of authority, like when your misbehaving and your father gives you "the stare" or when Police Officers look you directly in the eyes when doing an interview at a scene of an incident.

I refuse to make eye contact with certain people for reasons i don't know i'll just look down and away and pass them by. I'd have to say it's somewhat normal to not make eye contact. The eyes give off more information about you then you'd like to think.

its normal but you gotta change it. I have a teacher that yells if you dont look at her eyes when you are talking with her. Hope you dont get a teacher like that!
