This is a society with background homophobia. In my society (which I will assume is the same as your society, for the purposes of this comment) most people are told that being homophobic isn't acceptable, but we're still taught all sorts of veiled homophobic messages - like being gay isn't natural or right or normal. It takes active focus to detox your brain from that bullshit.
