  • If you're on a budget, it's perfectly sensible.

    I'm very fortunate in that it has been a long time since money was that tight for me, but I went through a phase of consciously looking at prices and then, once I'd finished, guessing what the total would be. Surprisingly often, the guess was pretty close to the final bill, so somehow my brain was adding things up without me deliberately trying to do that.

    I think it's sorta like how, if you spend a couple of weeks stopping to guess the time at random points and then checking what the time really is, your estimates can become pretty accurate. Our brains are capable of doing surprising things at a subconscious level.

    • I make it a hobby to mentally calculate the marginal return on the investment of additional cost to the marginal reduction in price on quantity purchases. There is almost always an optimal solution depending on how quickly you use the product.

      Sounds complicated but it's what millionaires do when they go shopping. In itself, the mental exercise is truly enjoyable.
