Some people are scared of the dark. Some people are afraid of heights. OP's fear is just way less common, so you all feel entitled to pick on him/her.

Well OK, darkness can give you anonymity. Think like a predator. Walk around with the lights off. Notice how the directional characteristic of dim light can make you almost invisible. You'll be a master of nighttime combat in no time.
