I think this is a case of him liking who he thought you were and then getting to know you a bit more and then not liking you in the way he liked the way he thought you were.
There IS a chance he's just nervous but from how he went from being in to you so clearly and openly to backing offquite a bit, I would say the most likely case is what I explained at the start of this comment.
