Is he in any of ur classes? Maybe ask him if he can help you with one of ur assignments or tests? Even if u know how to do it, just ask so u can talk to him. But make sure its something he's good at. Maybe tell him how smart he is (cheesy I know) to make him feel proud and you'll maybe have a little giggle together lol. There's a start, then u could sneak in a proper conversation.
