In a modern society, rights should be doled out equally. This lack of discrimination creates the increased fairness that allows people outside the powerful social spheres of American culture - groups like homosexuals and Mormons, for instance, to be a part of society no matter what prejudices the majority wishes to invoke against them. So if you find homosexuals "whiny", its because they are fighting for the same rights as Mormons, African-Americans, women and all sorts of minorities that do not wish to be oppressed by those in power.
