I had the same problem kind of. I am/was best friends with this girl and eventually everyone started making similar comments about us (including her mom calling me her boyfriend). This would have all been fine if I didnt just start falling for her recently. I took these comments as a sign I should tell her how I felt, like an idiot. It was great for a while but didnt work out. Now she still wants to be friends and so do I but every time I see her i get super depressed cause I still like her. You already made the right decision about that, this is just a cautionary tale in case things change.
Its normal for your friends to want you to be with someone you like, and they can prob see how you feel. But if theres no chance of it happening just tell them to stop cause its not going to help anyone.
