It isn't normal at all. These things occur as a direct result of forced captivity. When animals are being taken out of their natural habitat and displaced in restrictive environments where there's either a scarcity of potential mates of the opposite sex or none at all. They just succumb to their biological imperative. Still doesn't make it normal,though.
And when it does occur in their natural habitat, it's just a way of asserting dominance in order to establish their hierarchies. Nothing to do with sexual preference.

Meh, I used to have roosters that tried to mount each other and my dad had two male pigeons that were a pair. I find it quite normal.
