I've had my own troubles with sleep, since I was a kid, and have also experienced most of the things you've indicated happening to you. Because of this, I've asked a lot of people (200+, I'm guessing) about their sleeping habits. Everyone appears to enjoy talking about it too, it's great conversation, so I keep asking. I've also read hordes of material about the processes of sleep.
With that, my perception is that most of it is "normal" but maybe not all of it is common; the finger thing is not that common; the obsessing over past events and experiences is very common; to the point you hate yourself not as common. In the morning you feel somewhat rested, despite not having a sound sleep, that's pretty common and people can adapt to functioning normally on depraved sleep, it's just that they might never feel optimal again until they sleep soundly through a night. Drinking to help bliss yourself out enough to accept sleep is common too. You see, all of this stuff does happen to people, just maybe not loads of people. That's how I see it.
I believe you could overcome it, even if it's difficult to do. :)

It's not exactly typical.
