Is it normal that as a child i thought we were poor when we were not?

I remember when I was a child I have always thought that my family was the poorest one where we lived. Because of this I was very jealous of my cousin who through my eyes was living in great luxury.

I grew up to that until at about twelve or thirteen I realised that it was quite the contrary. My neighbours are striving to make ends meet while at home we are comfortable. What I don't understand is why as a little girl I have always thought of us as very poor?

Is It Normal?

  • Obviously your parents didn't believe in living too far beyond their means. That's a great thing, because far too many people think that having the money for the nicer house or car means that they HAVE to have it. Your parents didn't feel that way, that's a great thing.

  • Once I was so poor as a kid that I ate a bowl of rice crispies with root beer. Hmm, maybe not poor but just reckless.

  • you'll know what poor is when you get poor and not have nothing to eat for a few days. its not fun being poor.

  • Your parents may have wanted you to beleve that to keep you humble and to appreciate the things you do have.

  • My family was poor :/

  • Your parents never showed off and they never bought you all those big expensive toys, so they stayed rich.

  • At least you weren't actually poor, right?

  • It was the opposite for me.
I thought we were pretty comfortable for money but turns out we were broke and my parents were just hanging on to everything by a thread.

  • When I was little my family was pretty poor. But I never had a clue. My parents put on their happy faces and still gave me and my siblings an amazing childhood. I never knew of our bad financial situation until a couple years ago.
This really doesn't have much to do with your story but I related to it kinda in an opposite-ish way, hahaha....

  • That sounds like it tasted good, actually.

  • I'm the inverse, lol. We were really poor when I was 5y old, but 13 years later we have a lot of money (believe me) and I don't consider myself rich even if I'm aware of how much money we have...

  • Maybe there was a lack of loves?

    • No, she was probably not as spolied as some kids, like he cousins. But I was the opposite, we were fair low income, but I never knew better.

      Both lucky in my opinion
