  • Some years ago my brother in law kissed my stepdaughter on the lips ... she was maybe 18 ... it wasn't exactly lip locking, but it was kind of lingering. I wouldn't have called it a peck. At the time, I was completely shocked. Since this was my wife's family, I didn't say anything, but gut reaction was THIS IS NOT NORMAL. Even if they had been kissing that way since she was a little girl.

Had it been a lip lock, I may even have discussed it with my wife or stepdaughter immediately.

A couple of years after, the topic came up in a family discussion without my brother in law or step daughter present at the time. Without naming names, my sister in law was talking about how weird it was that her husband kissed his nieces and any younger female relatives on the lips and that it was kind of embarrassing.

My wife mentioned that she knows that he does that to his daughter, but doesn't say anything and that it has stopped now anyway.

Bottom line is, there is no way your lip locking is normal.

I'm not trying to pass judgement, but comparing your situation to mine, I would have to say that if I think what happened to my stepdaughter is unusual, what happened to your niece is definitely way off normal.

As far as what to do about it ... perhaps a little word to your sister in law in private, nothing confrontational. Just make her aware that you think that it's maybe something that her daughter doesn't realize she's doing, but perhaps she should offer her cheek rather than her lips ?
