I'm sorry you didn't receive the response you felt you deserved but I thought the whole point in giving gift to those in need is to possibly help some one else. Not so that everyone can look and see how good you are for helping the lowly hobo, and have him worship the ground you walk on. I know that's and extreme example but yours was extreme too. Also a lot of homeless struggle with mental illnesses and may not know how to react in a proper way. Just something to think about
