I don't normally talk about it because I don't want other people to start. I have been a nicotine slave since I could buy tobacco with brief breaks when I tried to quit and missed it too much. Why I continue to use: it gives me energy, relaxes my muscles like nothing else can, helps with appetite and it always puts a smile on my face.
Why I started: I was reading Sherlock Holmes and the references to tobacco made me want to try. My first time I started smoking out of a old man pipe and I had this brief moment of feeling fantastic before feeling really sick from overdoing it. That brief moment of feeling fantastic was enough though. If anything it made it more tempting because there is a challenge there like eating food with hot chilies.
I continued to smoke pipes and cigarettes while reading books whenever I had time to spare. I was pretty soon a regular smoker.
I quit smoking over health concerns eventually and started using smokeless tobacco and here I am. I still love the feeling I get from tobacco and I likely use more nicotine than ever. I've pretty much given up on quitting at this point and accepted that cancer is a real possibility, I just love it too much. I hope that answers some of your questions.
One other thing I would say is that tobacco is likely the strongest antidepressant and anti-anxiety agent available over the counter. So I think that there are people that depend on it for that reason too.
That is an interesting story. So you were trying to imitate a fictional figure which you admire? Why would anyone start things with you for smoking? A lot of people smoke. Unless its someone close who you care about and afraid for I hardly see why anyone would see it as abnormal.
IIN people seem to love cigarettes/tobacco for no apparent reason?
