They have a whole bunch of reasons, but the biggest one is addiction. Most smokers smoke because they feel so shitty when they stop.
If you're a smoker, smoking tastes good. It calms you when you're nervous and invigorates you when you're sleepy. It's really satisfying after a meal, after sex, after just about anything. The biggest reason, though, is that withdrawal is miserable. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise -- even if they tell themselves otherwise.
I know because I used to smoke for years. Clove cigarettes got me hooked on the nicotine, and then I just did it because quitting felt awful. I'll be a non-smoker for four years in a couple of months. It is SO good to have quit.
IIN people seem to love cigarettes/tobacco for no apparent reason?
