Is it normal not to make my bed or do my dishes/washing when i'm alone?

I've been raised by my OCD mother to make my bed everyday, do my washing consistently, leave no mess everywhere, keep the place spotless and dishes to be done after they've been used... etc

I realise this is all well and good however when I am by myself I just do not care. I'm very lazy - I'll leave dishes for a week and won't ever make my bed, leave clothes until I have nothing to wear and wear the same underwear a few days in a row sometimes.

I have no motivation because I know it's just going to get messy again, and I do things as they need to be done. I don't mind living in a messy house. I ensure there are no risks to my health though.

What motivates you to clean, why bother? Isn't it a lot of unnecessary effort?

Hmmm...I'm half and half. I dont make the bed unless I clean the room just to make it all spiffy, or right after I washed the sheets. It just looks nice for 5 seconds, but I couldnt give a shit otherwise, we're just gonna mess it up anyway.

I like to keep the sink empty but sometimes it's just not. When I cook, I use lots of stuff then we all eat and that's just more plates and bowls and utensils...it can wait a hot minute. No harm. But I usually do keep up on it as I go because I hate a full sink.

I do have little clutter piles here and there and it drives me nuts and I do go through and declutter at least once a month,,,,but again...no harm. Not hurtin anyone. I'm no where near close to those hoarders on that show, so it's all good. And I totally get the parental OCD thing...my dad was that way. Then when you go out on your own, it's a free for all.

Thanks for your input! I feel sorry for those hoarders, I watched a couple after reading this and they seem really depressed and in ill health.

My husband would not put up with that. He requires my to keep a clean and tidy house. If I don’t I get my arse severely spanked. Any dirty washing up not done or placed in the dishwasher will earn me 10 strokes per item. Same applies to dirty laundry not in the laundry basket or washing machine regardless of who’s it is. Same for clean laundry not put away. Also for messy, or dirty house.

You should want to clean you're place everyday because it's you're home .
Not doing dishes for a week is gross and you're going to get bugs and germs will spread , that's not healthy .

Take some pride in you're home .

I'm pretty lazy myself. My bf is ocd as heck about it. Dishes done immediately bed made perfectly etc. I make mine occasionally but always do mg dishes within a night or 2.

Opposite here. Wasn't allowed to clean growing up, had to live in some very disgusting filth. Now that I live alone I love doing the dishes and I have got in the habit of making my bed. Mainly it's good for mental health reasons. But, I don't really do much "self care" if I'm alone. Things like showering, changing your clothes and brushing your teeth are more of a courtesy to social peers.

So you were raised by hoarders?

Basically, but not as bad as what you see on the tv show. there was definitely some form of ocd in the mix. Ironically germaphobia, which i guess did not apply to the house itself. Sometimes I would sneakily clean while they were out, and felt the need to use gloves and a mask it was that gross.

Yeah lifes hard when you are around neat freaks always making you do unnecessary over cleaning. Thats not OCD tho, normal people can be neat freaks, people with OCD do stuffs like continuously washing their hands 2 hours straight, showering 20 times a day, opening and closing doors 100 times, switching on and off electric devices continuously to the point they get damaged and so on.
