In the neighborhood I live in, people have beat the crap out of each other over the results of a soccer game and/or have broken a bone or two during the game. I've also seen this happen with other sports as well, so I really can't see how it's any safer.
Why not just ask your son which sport he wants to play?

and sports are demanding and soccer is a contact sport. Let your son try them all, see which he likes the most
