The relevant thing is that he says it "just happened". Assault doesn't "just happen" and THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR IT.
I've worked in the family violence field for decades and that's a common bullshit excuse by violent men: "It just happened" (minimisation) usually coupled with "she provoked me" (blaming the victim) followed by other men approving their violence, as has been seen here, followed by escalation.
IIN my wife placed a divorce case for a slap in 14 months.
