Some families are more casual about nudity than others so it's hard to say how weird this is without knowing more. I think Americans are generally too uptight about such things and too quick automatically equate nudity with sex. Still, I would at least think she'd give you a warning first, something like "I got my nipples pierced, sure you still wanna see?" I also find it odd that when she told you she got a new piercing you didn't ask where it was. If someone told me they got a new piercing that would be my first question.
