Is it normal my psychiatrist became annoyed and cussed at me?

my psychiatrist got kind of annoyed and cussed at me today. i have been seeing her for a little more than a month and this is the first time it happened. she said and i quote:

"maybe the reason you're so paranoid all the time is because you smoke so much fucking marijuana. wouldn't you think?"

i was in shock. i just said i don't know. she did apologize, though. but it was weird. she is british and moved here to america. her accent is cute, so that made it kind of funny. she is 36. not that bad looking. i am only 25 so maybe since i am so young she thinks it's ok to talk to me like that? i don't know. is that normal for a psychiatrist to do? i will still continue to see her.

Is It Normal?

  • I can see her point... don't expect her to solve your problems if you're not willing to make any efforts yourself to change your situation. Quit smoking so much pot and see if you don't feel better.

Although I will say maybe she shouldn't have sworn at you.

  • She's supposed to help you help yourself. This seems like a sign of a bad psychiatrist.

  • I dunno, it depends on how much fucking marijuana you're smoking. Sounds to me like you rather enjoyed that little exchange.

I once had this therapist who was a cute, little, sweet, older, southern lady at Catholic Charities in Jackson, Mississippi tell me, "bullshit" in regards to something crazy I was hung up on at the time. It's quite the fond memory in my mind. I miss her, and hope she's doing well.

  • That's totally unprofessional even if she did apologise for it. If she does it again I'd be finding another shrink.

I don't see what her appearance has to do with it though.

  • No it isn't normal...
But be aware and please don't forget she's only human too..
She probably had a bad day, had a headache, has debts..
I suppose your physiatrist needs to analyse herself as well as her clients!

Also, since you pushed her to say that, maybe don't smoke the weed;)

  • Have you actually considered why you need to smoke so much marijuana?

  • i don't know if this is normal but i've had a psychology student encourage suicidal attempt, online. i kind of want to do it now. his reasoning is "to see my reaction" and "because it is fun". so i guess this could be possible. psychiatrists do have to deal with some sick shit and some of them are not good at keeping their harsh opinions to themselves. oh well, wrong career choice i suppose.

  • Weed does have a tendency to increase paranoia and anxiety in those who are prone to it so she does have a point.

That being said, it was still very rude and unprofessional of her to swear at you.

  • You're only one who know's how she meant it. It's unconventional but there's nothing wrong with a little authenticity.
