Urine coloration can be affected by many variables. Foods, drugs, supplements, and fluid levels all factor into how it appears to the human eye. Urine will be darker when fluids haven't been taken into the body for awhile. The more dehydrated you are, the darker your urine will seem. This is because it's composed of uric acid and many other waste products from your system as the body filters out waste at the cellular level.

In your case, time is probably the biggest factor. Waking up in the morning usually means about a third of the day has gone by without drinking fluids. Your urine may be exceptionally darker if you took in foods, vitamins, or beverages that influence color to a darker shade just before bedtime.

Fortunately, dark urine is rarely a bad sign of more serious problems. Just drink more liquids and you'll be fine, and you should see it return to a lighter color.
