Is it normal my optometrist lectured me about smoking cigarettes?

  • He may be a specialist but he's still a doctor after all and doctors find it very discouraging when young patients smoke. I once had an OB/GYN and hell, a gas station clerk even lectured me on cigarettes.

It really sucks to see patients that are barely hanging onto their health for reasons beyond their control and then see young, healthy patients throw their health away. Don't take it personally.

    • I'm a gas station clerk and it's REALLY hard for me NOT to lecture people about smoking OR dipping.

I have this one gentleman, probably in his upper forties or lower fifties, who comes in almost every morning and buys a pack of cigars. He's recently had surgery on his fingertips because of smoking, and for a while he stopped buying cigars. Now he's right back at it again!! Makes me wanna scream!!

He's not the only one either! Another man who dips had quit for a while, he would buy those packs of powdery jerky that are shaped like dip cans, whatever you call them... And now he's dipping again!

I could go on and on with these failure stories... It's really sad and frustrating!! T_T

      • I understand your frustration. I was a heavy smoker for 5 years, starting at 15 and quitting in January. I smoked for pretty much all of the reasons you'll typically hear: helps reduce stress, anxiety, feels good etc...

I can honestly say that, since quitting, my physical and mental health has greatly improved. Stress doesn't bother me as much, I have better ways of coping with anxiety and I overall feel better.

I feel freed in a way. No more going to work and worrying about whether I can make it off a half pack, no more hoping I put the lighter in my purse when I'm too far from home to go back, no more worrying about whether or not I can find a smoking area...

Knowing all of this, it pains me to see other young people smoking where I quit and feel way better. I wish I could tell them this but it's seen as rude and I have to respect that.

But I swear on my momma's grave that that man had STITCHES in his finger-tips. O_O
