I used to kill spiders because I was afraid of them, but as i matured and grew up, my attitudes and respect for all life has changed. Now if i can, l catch the spider in a glass and release it away from the house. To hunt down a cricket and kill it because it made a noise is a touch extreme. All life is precious including the bugs. Your nephew doesn't have to love creepy crawlies, but he just needs to learn to leave them alone. Finally, it's great that he has someone like you to look out for him.
