Don't listen to any of these people. You're devoting your whole life to societal expectations, which are created by people to keep you in line. If you want to go travel, meet people, have sex with strangers, get drunk and do drugs, just go do it. Screw school. You can always come back to that if actually living your life turns out to not be your thing. Excitement won't find you when you're studying for your SATs. Learn to Play an instrument and go on the road.
