Being vegan has the potential to be a healthy lifestyle, and it is better than globs of processed food, but it's extremely difficult to get the appropriate nutrition when your diet is limited like that...you have to be extremely diligent and careful to make sure to make sure you're getting what you need.
I've met people that have gone vegan because they had an eating disorder. When you have an incredibly restricted diet like that, it's very easy to tell people that you "can't" eat, and to avoid meals, trips to restaurants, and high calorie foods in the name of dietary or ethical choices. Apparently it makes a really good ruse for disordered eating.
