Is it normal my daughter watches drug documentaries

A lot of my family members were/are drug addicts, my daughter has seen it all, the pain out family goes through. She likes to watch drug documentaries because she claims, “I don’t get it. I want to see their mentality, and their lifestyle to understand why they would put family’s through this” I understand her point but and she’s seen it all already from our personal family experience, I just don’t know if I should allow it or not. She says it’s strictly for her to understand their mentality. Because of me as a mother allowing her to witness so much, (even though it not being my choice) she feels as though she needs an explanation, and if not from our “drug addict” members in our family, she is trying to put two and two together.

  • Seems educational. It's good to study what motivates people to inform how to deal with others. Also seeing drugs destroy peoples lives is a good influence to not do the same.

Sure. I doubt most drug documentaries encourage drug use.

It’s better for her to be watching a drug documentary than a video of a real person being murdered. Videos of people being murdered are easy to find online.
I was 13 when my brother showed me a video of real man dying. My brother said “hey look at this funny video”. I was not expecting what I saw. It involved a few guys, older man and a hammer. It messed me up for a while.

    • I think I watched the same video when I was about 13 or 14. It didn't bother me much, but the poor victims.

The only victim was the older man. They smashed his face repeatedly with a hammer until his face didn’t even look like a face anymore. Very disturbing.

        • I was also referring to another video by those killers, where they beat and possibly kill people who were campers or hobos.

yep, That's a "popular" one (and i hate how people have even normalized that shit to be "popular"). the only people i see sharing those type of vids are childish edgelords who think it makes them seem hardcore to be so disconnected from reality that they can't bother to think how they'd feel. they just tell themselves "wow I watch snuff films Im really badass" and then post it to others like they're showing off how little humanity they have, like their romanticized psycho idols.

Good hot dogs like Nathan's when cooked right are really delicious.

At least it's not ISIS setting a man on fire.

It's normal to watch educational documentaries. It's more normal for people to watch documentaries on this stuff than to actually have the life experience.

I think you have made a valid observation. The same principle applies to sex. It is more common to watch videos documenting this stuff than to have much real life experience at all.

Totally normal. I watch them all the time to try and understand my brother, father and girlfriend. Mostly my girlfriend.

It just helps for some reason even if you have experienced it in real life.

What is your concern about her watching this stuff?

Her falling into the footsteps.. with her seeing so much she knows so much. She states that if she says our whole family go through so much pain and torture why would she add on top of that and follow the foot steps of our family members.

Maybe watch with her and discuss it. I know I'd appreciate that. It just sounds like she's trying to understand.

My health teacher would put those on a lot and make us take notes. I think that your daughter just likes to learn or to be informed/educated, which isn’t really a problem in my eyes.

She might even benefit from visiting with an educated therapist that has a background dealing with substance abusing families. There may be local support groups she could contact. She's inquisitive in a positive way to want self-education like this.
