Yeah, the majority of parents aren't necessarily too controlling, but rather many people expect their children follow in their footsteps. Some people even want their kids to go to the same Universities as them, join (or at least pledge) the same Greek organizations, go into the same lines of work, hold the same political, moral, ethical and religious beliefs. I certainly think it's not only too controlling, but downright stifling.
Well my dad has a lot of opinions about how I should live my life, but I don't think I would consider that "controlling", since he doesn't punish me for not doing exactly what he wants all the time.
