Is your father an artist, or an established art critic?

If not, then his comments on your art probably say more about his relationship with you and his prejudices than your work.

I don't understand a lot about modern art. If my daughter - who is very interested in art - started doing things I didn't understand, I'd tell her that I wasn't really competent to make any intelligent comments on her work, but I'd at least praise the thought and effort that went into it.

At the moment, she's only nine, so her artistic technique has a lot of room to develop. It wouldn't be hard for me to mock and criticize every one of her paintings. Instead, what I and her mother try to do is find at least one thing in each painting that we like.

That, it seems to me, is how supportive, loving parents should respond to their child's art.

He's probably just jealous he can't be as good as you.

My mom is an artist and extremely blunt and she tells me when she doesn't like my art but also when she does like it. But she's supportive and not just trying to hurt me. If he's not supporting you in any way and being mean about it then he's being a bad father.
