This is similar to what a friend of mine was going through. His wife threatened to leave his son and him if he kept his dog. He kept the dog, and the bitch left. It turned out she was using the dog as an excuse to leave him. She wasn't happy being married and having the responsibilities of taking care of a child. I suggest you have a talk with your boyfriend because the dog might not be the reason he will leave.
